About Jeff Childs
I grew up in Croydon, Surrey and enjoyed painting and drawing from an early age.
Although I was accepted on a Diploma in Art & Design course at Reigate School of Art, I left
to pursue a very different career path, but I have been involved in
a variety of creative activities, including music and poetry as well
as sculpture.
I
had the opportunity to return to study and took a degree in
Psychology and Media and Cultural studies. I have worked within
counselling and therapeutic settings, part of this working with
clients in art therapy. My work has been a continuum of a study of
the person, from what motivates people and how we interact
culturally and creatively, to how the body is represented
externally, which for me completes a circle. I produce portrait
figures, female forms for interior display and also work on a larger
scale for outdoor installation.
Every part of the process of making these pieces is a very personal
activity from the outset. I work closely with my models who bring
with them a uniquely feminine perspective and and who actively
participate in shaping the poses, rather than being passively
uninvolved in the composition of the image. Similarly, the
relationship between myself as the sculptor and the artists with
whom I work is very dynamic.
These figures are modelled from life and detailed photography - in
attempting to capture their spirit of energy and sensuality, my hope
is that you will find them both beautiful and vibrant.
